Russian grandmaster Ian Nepomniachtchi suffered a first defeat at the tournament, which takes place in Yekaterinburg. In the party of the seventh round Nepomniachtchi with the black pieces lost to Frenchman Maxime Vachier–Lagrave. The party ended on the 42nd move.
In a parallel meeting was a draw — Alexander Grischuk played out a draw with the Netherlands Anish Giri. For the Russians this draw was the seventh in seven games at the tournament. Compatriot Grischuk Kirill Alekseenko also played a draw against the Chinese Dean Liren.
After the seventh round of the forgetful, the asset is 4,5 points, shares the lead in the standings with Vachier-Lagrave.
The candidates tournament with eight grandmasters will be held in Yekaterinburg until 3 April. The winner will receive the right to host the match for the world chess crown from current world champion Norwegian Magnus Carlsen.
