Quito, Apr 10 (EFE) .- Ecuador’s Emergency Operations Committee (COE), which attends to the health emergency due to the coronavirus pandemic, resolved this Friday to provide a ten-day quarantine period for travelers who arrive at its country from Brazil by air to stay.

It also decided that a new entry protocol be drawn up for high-performance athletes who come to Ecuador to participate in competitions, in order to protect their health and that of their Ecuadorian colleagues.

The COE ordered the ministries of Health, Transportation and Foreign Relations to modify the regulations applied by the pandemic for the entry of people by air, so that the quarantine is applied to those who come from Brazil.

“All passengers whose point of origin, stopover or transit is Brazil, and are Ecuadorian residents or citizens, must undergo mandatory quarantine for 10 days at their homes”, regardless of whether they have undergone a diagnostic test for covid-19 , specified the agency.

Travelers, in addition, must have undergone a PCR test carried out at least ten days before the trip, although the Operations Committee determined that in this case the result of said test will not matter, since it assured that all must undergo the period of Mandatory Preventive Isolation (APO) in their homes.

Likewise, the COE ordered that the periods of isolation (APO) can be carried out in “the accommodation regulated by the Ministries of Tourism and Government, which have their respective registration or operating permit,” be incorporated into the regulations.

On the other hand, the COE entrusted the Ministry of Health and the Sports Secretariat with the elaboration of a protocol “that regulates the entry of elite athletes, that guarantees their health and that of Ecuadorians.”

This latest decision was announced a few days after at least three members of the Brazilian soccer team Gremio were detected with covid-19.

This situation forced Conmebol to move the Copa Libertadores match between Independiente del Valle and Gremio to Asunción today, which should have been played on Wednesday in Quito.

The announcement made this Friday by the Ecuadorian COE comes after several authorities have warned of an increase in contagion by covid-19, as well as the saturation of the health care system throughout the country.

The Ecuadorian authorities have also warned of the possibility that the so-called Brazilian variant of the coronavirus is already in the country.

Ecuador added 1,059 new cases of covid-19 this Friday, so the number of infections with the disease rose to 324,678 accumulated positives so far in the pandemic.

The death toll confirmed by covid-19 reached 12,247, to which are added 4,911 “probable deaths” with the disease, according to figures from the Ministry of Health. EFE
