In a unique collection of the van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam for the past dozen years was kept not only of creation and the self-portraits of a famous artist, but his picture is one of two surviving in the world. It turned out that it depicts not 13-year-old Vincent, and his 15-year-old brother Theo.
About the same time, the Museum announced on its official website. The study conducted by the Museum staff together with writer and journalist Yves Vasseur, who was involved in the organization of the exhibition van Gogh in Borinazh, Belgium, in 2015. In this village the artist lived for some time in his youth.
The photograph was presented to the world in 1957, researcher and biographer of the artist Marc Edo, Talbo. The shot hit the Amsterdam Museum, signed Portrait of van Gogh (about 1866). It was published in various monographs, magazines, books and catalogues in different countries. The guy in the photo is very much like a 19-year-old Vincent from the second snapshot, so no doubt that’s what it is.
In 2014, the Dutch television show leading after the study suggested that the pictures may be shown another person. The decided to send for examination. Specialists of the Institute of Informatics of the University of Amsterdam examined copies of all the known portraits of Vincent and his brother and identified that photo really depicts Theo van Gogh.
This suggests that in the world there is only one picture of Vincent van Gogh.
Axel rüger, Director of Amsterdam Museum, said:
“This discovery helped to get rid of illusions about the person in the photo. As a result, we got something unique – a portrait of Theo.”
Both photos were still stored in the Dutch Museum.
