The Chechen war veteran Danila Bagrov tries to return to civilian life. He comes to St. Petersburg to his brother Victor. But he associated with the mafia and involves in dismantling the unsuspecting Danilo.

On the background of many criminal fighters of the 90s Alexey Balabanov has managed to create not just another dark film, but a real symbol of the era. The image of a fair killer made a star Sergei Bodrov Jr., and the soundtrack group Nautilus Pompilius many consider one of the most successful components of the picture.

2. Brother 2

Danila Bagrov meets some of his friends on the Chechen war. Soon one of them was suddenly killed. Daniel finds out that he has had problems because of my brother living in USA. The character flies to America to restore justice.

After the success of “Brother” Balabanov has removed more bright and a little “folk” extension. But this approach has ensured the film a cult status. And the phrase “In what force, brother?” — altogether one of the most cited in the Russian cinema.

3. War

Conscript Ivan and English actor John Boyle had long been a prisoner of the Chechen rebels. After some time they were released. Ivan just because he didn’t give the ransom, and John — that he raised money for the return of his wife. But the Englishman does not want to help. And then he agrees with Ivan to go together to Chechnya and to release his wife alone.

Another film by Alexei Balabanov. It played its first role Alexey Chadov, and a favorite of Director Sergei Bodrov Jr. appeared as the paralyzed captain Medvedev. The slogan gloomy picture of the consequences of the Chechen war was the phrase: “This is not a “Brother 3″ this is War.”

4. In August 44‑go

The action takes place in Belarus in 1944. The invaders have already won, but in the rear there was a group of spies that regularly sends important information to the enemy. Officer SMERSH Pavel Alekhin and his team must uncover the spy network, before the military will begin full-scale operation.

The story is based on the eponymous novel by Vladimir Bogomolov (also known as “Moment of truth”), in which the author almost the first time in Soviet history, spoke about intelligence activities during the war. But in the movie changed many aspects of the original, making the action easier and more dynamic fighter.

5. 9 Rota

  • Russia, Ukraine, Finland, 2005.

  • Duration: 139 minutes.
  • IMDb score of 7.1.

In the late ‘ 80s seven of the Soviet conscripts fall in Afghanistan. After several months of hard training in basic training they are sent to the scene of hostilities. The company has to take the high ground and ensure the safety of the convoy.

This film caused a lot of controversy: condemned and historical inaccuracies, and the very morality of the picture. But one thing is for sure: Fedor Bondarchuk, to whom “company 9” was the first full-length work, knows how to shoot action and battle scenes. Still, the experience of the Director in advertising came in handy during the action.

6. Star

In the summer of 1944 a group of Soviet scouts with the call sign “Star” are sending to the rear of the Nazis to figure out the quantity of enemy equipment. The team faces with unequal forces of the enemy and sacrifices the many for the job.

Another film dedicated to the great Patriotic war. The picture was taken on the novel by Emmanuel Kazakevich, and its already filmed in 1949. The plot is based on real events. But the author changed many of the details, preferring fiction. As such, the story has hit the screens.

7. The Turkish gambit

During the war Erast Fandorin escapes from Turkish captivity and meets a girl, Barbara, came to see his fiancé. When they reached the Russian camp, he realizes that the offensive plans of ruining a spy. However, to calculate the villain is not easy.

The book by Boris Akunin about Erast Fandorin — classic detectives, and most of the action takes place in Moscow or St. Petersburg. But the plot of “the Turkish gambit”, set during the Russo‑Turkish war, allowed the authors of the film adaptation to add a lot of action and battle scenes. Interestingly, in all the movies Akunin the main character is played by different actors. In the “Turkish gambit” in the image of Fandorin starred Egor Beroev.

8. The wild East

  • Kazakhstan, Russia, 1993.
  • Action, fantasy.
  • Duration: 98 min.
  • IMDb: 6,8.

Circus dynasty of midgets constantly terrorizes and robs a gang of criminals. When the victim runs out of patience, they hire experienced hands for protection. He assembles a team and prepares for the defense.

The author of the famous “Needle” Rashid Nugmanov came up with this movie together with Viktor Tsoi, who wanted to play a major role. After the death of the singer part of the story changed. But in a post-apocalyptic story it is easy to see echoes of “the Seven samurai” by Akira Kurosawa and “Mad max”.

9. Hardcore

  • Action, fantasy.
  • Duration: 96 minutes.
  • IMDb: 6,7.

The main character wakes up in a laboratory. He can remember only his wife, but she was immediately kidnapped by the villains. Now a hero with the support of the mysterious Jimmy tries to save his beloved, and at the same time to investigate their past. He turned into a cyborg.

The film Ilya of Naishuller, without a doubt, the most dynamic fighter in the whole collection. Action here starts literally in the first minute and doesn’t end until the very end. With all the action we see through the eyes of the protagonist. But at the same time in the frame, you can find a lot of stars: from Sergey Shnurova to Eugene Bazhenov. Although some of them appear just a few seconds.

10. Kandahar

  • IMDb: 6,7.

In the mid‑90s transport plane carrying weapons under the guise of humanitarian aid, was forced to get in Kandahar. Five Russian pilots were captured. After several months, the team makes sure that there is no help. And then the pilots decide to escape.

Like other movies on this list, “Kandahar”, a lot has been criticized for distortion of actual events. For example, from the plot in a strange way, we lost all the pilots with non-Slavic names. But if you ignore the historical basis, it’s a good picture about the escape from captivity.
