Conservatives and Greens Beat Popular Funding Records

OTTAWA – The Conservative Party of Canada raised $ 8 million in the first quarter of this year, a national record across all parties. This crop also surpasses the Conservatives’ performance by $ 2 million in the same quarter of 2018.
The e Conservative leader Andrew Scheer, attributes the financial prowess of his party to a message that finds an echo in the population; he sees this as a sign that Canadians want change in Ottawa.

Parties must submit their quarterly financial statements to Elections Canada, which posts them on its website. Until now, only the accounts of the Green Party and the Bloc Québécois are officially published; Conservatives and Liberals unveiled their figures at the request of The Canadian Press.

The Bloc Quebecois raised $ 215,421 in the first quarter, more than double last year at $ 101,234. The new leader of the party, Yves-François Blanchet, was elected unopposed on January 12, at the beginning of this quarter.

The Conservatives were twice as good as the Liberals, who raised $ 3.9 million – which is still their best first quarter in three years, even though the party had to get out of the winter in part of the game. SNC-Lavalin case.

Liberal spokesman Braeden Caley said journalists have been asking for weeks “what price the Liberals would pay”. Instead, he mocked, the number of party members has increased by 16% over the first quarter of 2018, and the number of donors has increased by 15%, reaching 33,290. These two figures however, are lower than in the first quarters of 2015 and 2016 – just before and just after the last election. According to Mr. Caley, the two most “paid” fundraising e-mails so far this year were about climate change.

Record also for the Greens

In this quarterly fundraiser, the Liberals have only managed to beat the Conservatives three times out of 13 since the last election – in the fourth quarter of 2015, at the time of the election, and in the third and fourth quarters of 2016, a year later. Since the 2015 election, the Conservatives have raised a total of $ 11 million more than the Liberals.

Caley argues that the Conservatives are spending more money on fundraising, which means that the gap between the net proceeds of parties after spending is not as large.

The Green Party of Canada had the best first quarter in its history, raising $ 783,278, nearly 50% more than the same period last year.

The Greens have recently had very good scores in provincial elections, including last week in Prince Edward Island, where they will form the official opposition for the first time in Canada. The Greens have now elected MPPs in British Columbia, Ontario, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, while Federal Leader Elizabeth May is sitting in Parliament.

Rosie Emery, Green Party press secretary, says that since the election in Prince Edward Island, the phones are on the go.

The all-new People’s Party of Canada, the Conservative defector Maxime Bernier, garnered nearly as much as the Greens in the first quarter, with a total of $ 762,000. The libertarian party of MP Beauceron did not exist in the corresponding quarter of 2018.

The New Democratic Party is the only party that seems to have lost ground in the first quarter. He received donations totaling $ 1.2 million in the first quarter, compared to $ 1.4 million for the same period last year.
